We have several types of hay that we use for our own chins. All are $2/lb (except 3rd timothy) plus shipping and are available in half pound increments. Rarely is it worthwhile to ship hay, but often there is room in a box for a pound or so of 'treat' hay: bluegrass or 3 rd timothy/bluegrass mix are favorites. Any quantity is available for pick-up.
Western timothy hay is the most important part of a chinchilla's diet. Brand depends on availability. We use KMS Hayloft and/or Small Pet Select 2nd crop hay. Available in 1/2 pound increments. $2/lb plus shipping
A soft, all leaf grass hay from Small Pet Select. If a chin does not eat hay, they will probably eat this. Available in half pound increments. $3 lb.
Orchard grass is sweet and long-leafed. It makes a great addition to their daily hay. Our chins get about 75% western timothy and 25% orchard grass. Chins love variety and different grass hays are a great way to satisfy them. Available in 1/2 pound increments. $2/lb. plus shipping
Blue Grass hay from KMS. This is an all leaf hay similar to orchard grass. It is a favorite for stuffing hay toys. Available in 1/2 pound increments. $2/lb plus shipping.
Oxbow Essentials Chinchilla Deluxe is a high quality alfalfa based pellet. We both use and recommend an Oxbow diet for all our chinchillas. We have fresh pellets available. Feeding 2 tablespoons per day, a chin will need about 1 1/2 to 2 lbs of pellets per month. Pellets should be consumed within 60 days. A 5 lb bag will fit in a medium box with room for apple chews and more.
Pick up: $2/lb any quantity. 5 lb bag: $10.00 plus shipping
Alfalfa is a must for young chins, pregnant and nursing mothers and is a great occasional treat for other chins. These cubes are quite hard and are a great carry/chew toy. One pound is shown. Alfalfa cubes are $1/lb plus shipping.
Rosehips are an excellent source of Vit C and calcium. Only the red outside shell is eaten. Whole rosehips are $10 lb or $5 half pound plus shipping. NEW! Cut and sifted (C/S) seedless rose hips are $12 lb or $6 half pound plus shipping. Shipping for 1 pound by itself is $6.
Oats are a good safe treat and very helpful in hand taming shy chinchillas. Due to their small size, 2 or 3 can be given in a day while hand-taming. We sell only Purina Race Horse Oats to insure a quality product. A half-pound will last many weeks. Please Note: Oats must be given in very limited quantities: 1 per day unless hand-taming for a very short time.
$1 per half pound = 1+ cups.
4'' long, 1 1/2" Poplar dowel with a 3/4" hole and beveled cut-outs. $5 plus shipping
Finding safe blocks has been a problem so I made some. They are about 1 1/2" x 2" with a 3/4" hole for hay stuffing. The wood is poplar, which is very safe and will not splinter like pine. No coloring or other treatments added. $2 each
Simple hanging toys made from a lave bite, safe poplar blocks and pieces, organic apple wood and natural pumice topped by a folded length of Shredder strung on a wire. Each piece is about 7" long. It is recommended that toys be rotated regularly (weekly). $4 each or 3 for $10.
Thin round slices of 1 1/2" poplar. These have been a big hit with some of our chins. 4 oz, about 60 coins for $5 plus shipping.
Brown paper bags stuffed with different types of grass hays: Various timothy hays (2nd and 3rd cuts), Botanical hay, Orchard grass, Meadow grass, Bluegrass, plus a bit of alfalfa, a pinch of crushed rosehips and bits of apple chew sticks. Ingredients vary. $2 per bag plus shipping.
The same Blue Cloud as the dust, these rocks are a big hit. Our chins chew the rock and then try to roll in the dust they make. Each rock is about 3 oz and will provide hours of fun. $3 per rock plus shipping. 8-9 rocks fit in a small Priority Mail box, shipping $6.
A few scrapes on a horse cookie once a week are our chinchillas' guilty pleasure. The cookies are very hard and will last a long time. Hold onto it tightly and let your chin scrape a bit off. $1 each plus shipping
Oxbow's Critical Care is an important tool for helping sick chins . It is a combination of fiber, nutrients, and probiotics. Mixed with water to make a paste of varying consistency depending on need, it will also supplement a chin's water intake. There has always been a problem with feeding it- often a sick chin needs to be 'burritoed' in order to be fed. This can cause stress at a time when it is not needed. Most of our chins will eat Critical Care readily, even greedily, but it can take time to get them used to it. A chin may need to be tempted, pretending the CC is a treat. You can try sprinkling a very small amount (a few grains) on your chin's pellets so it grows used to the taste. After talking with our vets and with the consent of Oxbow, we are offering small amounts of Critical Care to chin owners for this purpose. Each bag contains about 6 tsp (15g) of product. Each teaspoon when mixed with water makes from 7-12 cc. A normal feeding for a 550-700g chin will fall into this range. However, each bag will provide many small amounts to tempt a chin. Sent by US first class mail, the cost is $3. Please note: Critical Care normally should be used in conjunction with proper vet care. If it is needed, there is a reason and Critical Care treats symptoms, not causes.
5 cc These have very hard tips. A chin is unlikely to get a hunk of plastic that can be swallowed (It may still need to be disposed of). The tip is long enough to get past the teeth. These also have a fairly wide mouth so loading them doesn't take forever. Clean with soapy water and rinse thoroughly before reuse. $1 each plus shipping or 4 for $10 including shipping.
Bene-bac gel is a probiotic specifically formulated for small mammals. Bene-bac can be administered in measured doses at specific times, making it a powerful tool in supporting a chin's digestive system when administering antibiotics or for any time when supportive therapy is necessary. Available in a graduated 15cc syringe. Normal dosage is 1cc every other day. Shelf life is usually over 1 year.
$9 per syringe plus shipping
Made of quality anti-pil fleece with hanging tabs; patterned on both sides. Hearts or Flower hammocks, $8. LSU hammocks, $10. Plus shipping (Priority is usually $6 for up to 4). Use shower curtain hooks or binder rings for mounting (not included). Hooks: 4 for $2.
Some chins like taut hammocks but many like them sloppy loose.
We use Lixit water bottles exclusively and are very happy with them. Mounting spring included. Remove the turtle. We recommend mounting one 8 oz bottle per chinchilla in the cage or a 16 oz for pairs and trios. Mount vertical with the spout at shoulder level to a chin on all fours. It is a great idea to have a spare.
8 oz: $7.50 each; 16 oz: $10 each; plus shipping

QC Chinchilla Double Carrier CNC-1610 $70.
This carrier was designed for us to safely carry two chins. Each is protected from the other and there are no worries about chewing the car’s interior. If you have only one chin, the other side can be used to carry supplies. It is expensive, but I believe it is the finest carrier available.
The carrier measures 16" wide x 10" deep x 8" high and is divided into two, 8" wide sections. There is a 2" wide metal "frame" between the sections, to prevent contact between animals. The individual opening tops and front are made of 1" x 1" wire, with a solid metal back and sides. It has a 3" deep metal tray and a pull-up handle in the center. NEW: we now also have this carrier at the same price without the middle divider so it is suitable for a bonded pair or if you just want more room. QC CC-16 Double Carrier $45

NOTE: Our model does not have the middle divider pictured and it does have the handle on top for one-handed carrying.
